Our smartphones, laptops, iPads, and drives are overflowing with stuff. From random screenshots to endless photos, apps, and subscriptions, our devices are packed full.
I am sure on at least one of your devices, you’ve gotten that dreaded notification: Storage is full!
Annoying, isn’t it?
Crazy how much we consume and save every single day.
In this post, I want to walk you through an easy, step by step guide to declutter your digital world. Because when your devices are clean, your mind feels lighter too.

What is digital clutter?
In case you are confused about what digital clutter really is, let me explain in simple words.
Just like our homes get cluttered with clothes, boxes, and random products, our digital devices get cluttered too.
Think about your home for a second. You keep buying storage bins, cabinets, maybe even a bigger apartment to fit more stuff in. But soon, the space feels small again. Things pile up everywhere. You feel frustrated.
This is what clutter feels like in real life.
Now take the same thing into our digital world. We switched so much of our life onto phones and laptops. From photos to bills to work to entertainment. Literally, everything.
And guess what? Our devices are now filled with random files, apps, and junk that serve no purpose.
That extra weight takes up space, energy, and time. This is what digital clutter looks like.
Why you must do digital declutter
Decluttering your digital space is just as important as decluttering your home and your mind.
When your phone or laptop is full of useless stuff, it feels overwhelming. It even holds you back.
Let me give you an example. You open your phone to check an important message, but before you get there, you tap on Instagram. Then suddenly you are scrolling for 20 minutes. Sound familiar?
I’ve been there. When I had too many social media apps on my phone, I was constantly distracted. But once I deleted most of them, the urge to check went away. I became more focused and calm.
Clutter steals your time, energy, and attention.
On top of that, too much storage slows down your devices. Apps crash, files take forever to load, your phone battery drains faster. Annoying again, right?
Decluttering your digital world doesn’t just free space. It gives you peace. It helps you breathe. It resets your focus.

How do you digitally declutter?
Now let’s get into the actual steps. Here’s the 15 Step Digital Declutter Checklist that will help you simplify your digital life.
PS: If you want to declutter just your phone, I already have a step by step guide for that. But in this post, I’ll talk more about laptops and computers. Don’t worry, most steps can also apply to phones and tablets.
Step 1: Delete items from desktop
Start with your desktop or home screen.
We all do this. Save random files, photos, or shortcuts right on the desktop so we can find them easily. But after a while, it looks like chaos.
Take 10 minutes to scan through everything. Delete what you don’t need anymore. Old photos, duplicate files, shortcuts to apps you don’t use.
A clean desktop not only looks beautiful but makes you feel calm every time you open your computer.
Step 2: Create folders for important items
Once you’ve deleted the junk, organize what’s left.
Your desktop might still have dozens of files from different categories. Like documents, edited versions of the same project, random photos.
Create folders with simple names. Put everything into its proper folder.
Example: “Work,” “Personal,” “Photos,” “Bills.”
This way you’ll always know where things are and won’t waste time searching.
Step 3: Declutter documents
This was a big one for me. After college, my laptop was filled with old PPTs and assignments I no longer needed.
Go through your files, downloads, and document folders. Delete what’s useless. If something is important, move it to a properly labeled folder.
Tip: Create subfolders too. Example: under “Documents,” you can have “Work,” “Finance,” “Travel,” etc.
When you organize now, you won’t lose important files later.
Step 4: Emails
Ahh, emails. The one place we all drown.
We subscribe to hundreds of newsletters, often by mistake while shopping online. Suddenly our inbox is full every morning.
Start unsubscribing from the ones you don’t read. You’ll be surprised how much peace that brings.
For important emails, create folders here too. Example: “Work,” “Receipts,” “Personal.”
Trust me, you’ll thank yourself the next time you need to quickly find that one email.
Step 5: Remove old programs
Do you still have programs you downloaded years ago but never use? Like Photoshop, Illustrator, or random free trial software?
Uninstall them. They take up space, slow down your system, and even drain your battery in the background.
If you haven’t opened a program in months, you don’t need it.
Step 6: Review subscriptions
Not just email subscriptions. I’m talking about digital subscriptions in general.
Paid or free. Netflix, random apps, or tools you signed up for but never use.
Ask yourself: Do I really need this? Do I use it often? If not, cancel it.
Think of the money you’ll save too.
Step 7: Declutter photos
This is a big one for me. As someone who creates content, my phone and laptop are filled with thousands of photos.
Every month, I sit down and delete most of them. Random screenshots, duplicate selfies, blurry shots.
Photos take up the most space on your device.
Create folders for the ones you want to keep. Example: “Family,” “Work,” “Book Recommendations.”
I love having a “Book Reviews” folder where I save screenshots for future reading ideas. It makes life so much easier.

While decluttering, check if your device needs updates. Software, apps, or even drivers.
Keeping everything up to date makes your system run smoother.
Step 11: Close unused accounts
We all have them. Old email accounts, forgotten social media logins, accounts on random sites.
If you don’t use them anymore, close them. Having too many accounts only distracts you and sometimes risks your security.
Step 12: Scan for viruses and malware
While you’re cleaning, make sure your device is safe too. Run an antivirus scan. Install a good security program if you don’t have one.
Viruses slow down your device and can even steal your data. So this step is important.
Step 13: Empty recycle bin
Don’t forget this one. When you delete something, it often just goes to the recycle bin or trash folder.
Go in there and delete everything permanently. That’s when your space really clears up.

This is an extra step I recommend. After cleaning, make a backup of important files. Use an external hard drive or cloud storage.
That way, if something happens to your device, your important memories and documents are safe.
